1. Install system dependencies
Choose your distribution. These commands use sudo to install system libraries. They keep your desktop’s existing audio service.
Ubuntu 24.04
sudo apt-get update
sudo apt-get install libwebkitgtk-6.0-4 libqrencode4 libssl3t64 \
bubblewrap dbus-daemon xdg-dbus-proxy openssh-client curl python3 \
ca-certificates libatomic1 pulseaudio-utils gstreamer1.0-pulseaudio \
libltdl7 libwrap0 libspeexdsp1 libsoxr0 libtdb1 libwebrtc-audio-processing1 \
apparmor desktop-file-utils
Run this one-time setup to allow Outer Loop to create its sandbox:
curl -fSLo outer-loop-setup-ubuntu.sh https://outerloop.sh/download/linux/0.1.1/setup-ubuntu.sh
sudo bash outer-loop-setup-ubuntu.sh
Fedora 44
sudo dnf install webkitgtk6.0 qrencode-libs openssl-libs libdispatch \
bubblewrap dbus-daemon xdg-dbus-proxy openssh-clients curl python3 \
ca-certificates pulseaudio-utils gstreamer1-plugins-good libtool-ltdl \
fftw-libs-single webrtc-audio-processing desktop-file-utils
Omarchy / Arch
Update your system first: on Omarchy, use Update → Omarchy; on Arch, run sudo pacman -Syu.
sudo pacman -S --needed webkitgtk-6.0 qrencode openssl libdispatch \
bubblewrap dbus xdg-dbus-proxy openssh curl python ca-certificates \
libpulse gst-plugins-good libtool speexdsp libsoxr fftw tdb \
webrtc-audio-processing-1 desktop-file-utils
2. Install Outer Loop
Run this as your normal desktop user, without sudo:
curl -fSLo outer-loop-install.sh https://outerloop.sh/download/linux/install.sh
bash outer-loop-install.sh
The installer detects your distribution and CPU, downloads the matching package, verifies its SHA-256 checksum, and adds Outer Loop to your app launcher. It does not install system packages or change your saved servers.
Read the installer · Download checksums and release metadata
3. Open Outer Loop
Open Outer Loop from your app launcher. Choose This PC, add a server, or use Fetch from another device to bring over a server from another Outer Loop installation.
You can also launch it from a terminal:
~/.local/bin/outer-loop
Updating and removing
To update, run the installation commands again, then close and reopen Outer Loop.
To remove the installed app, close its windows and run:
rm -f ~/.local/bin/outer-loop
rm -f ~/.local/share/applications/dev.outergroup.OuterLoop.Linux.desktop
rm -f ~/.local/share/icons/hicolor/256x256/apps/dev.outergroup.OuterLoop.Linux.png
rm -rf ~/.local/opt/outer-loop/releases
rm -f ~/.local/opt/outer-loop/current ~/.local/opt/outer-loop/previous
Your saved servers and keys in ~/.config/outer-loop, and browser data in ~/.local/share/outer-loop, are kept. On Ubuntu, you may also remove the system setup after uninstalling:
sudo apparmor_parser --remove /etc/apparmor.d/outer-loop-release
sudo rm /etc/apparmor.d/outer-loop-release
