Outer Loop for iPhone and iPad
Last updated: October 7, 2026
Outer Loop is made by Marcus Lewis. It connects your device to servers you choose. There are no ads or tracking SDKs, and the app does not send me your browsing activity or check my servers for app updates. Updates come through the App Store.
Your servers and saved information
Connections go to the servers and services you use. Their operators may receive and retain information under their own privacy policies. Your normal SSH traffic does not pass through an Outer Loop service.
Saved server settings stay on your device. Saved passwords and private keys are stored in the device’s Keychain. You can remove a saved server and its associated credentials in the app. Data on your remote servers is managed separately.
Optional pairing and downloads
If you pair devices, an online relay passes end-to-end encrypted messages between them. The relay cannot read their contents and does not receive your SSH private key. Pairing mailboxes are temporary and normally expire after ten minutes, or are removed when the pairing is ended.
If you install Outer Shell through the app, it downloads the installer from outershell.org. Our hosting providers, including AWS and Railway, process technical information when you use pairing or downloads. This may include your IP address, request time, requested URL, app or device information, and response status. These logs help operate, troubleshoot and protect the services. The relay’s AWS access logs omit IP addresses and message contents and are scheduled for deletion after 30 days. Download access logs include IP addresses. Raw logs are deleted after approximately 30 days, once successfully aggregated. Aggregated download statistics are retained indefinitely. Other hosting logs follow the providers’ retention practices.
Apple and messages to me
Apple may provide me with App Store reports and diagnostics under its privacy settings and policies. I use these to understand and improve the app. If you contact me, I receive what you send and keep it as needed to respond and resolve the issue. I do not sell personal information or use it for advertising.
